Everything is made to the true angles measured at survey. ### Who it is for It suits any household where the hallway is the pinch point: shoes, coats, bags, buggies, hoovers, sports kit and shopping all arriving through one door. It is also the single best-value bespoke joinery project in most homes, because it creates storage without losing any usable floor area. ### When it is needed Whenever the hallway stops working, or during a renovation when the stairs and hall are being decorated. If a downstairs WC or a new floor is going in, designing the storage at the same time avoids cutting into new finishes later. ### Why professional joinery matters The void under a staircase is a series of different heights and angles. A standard cupboard placed inside it wastes the deepest part, which is exactly the part that holds the most. Getting real usable storage out of it requires units made to the measured angles, which means bespoke, not adapted. Design consultations and quotations are free. There is no fixed price list, every project is priced individually because every project is made to measure. A deposit of 30–50% is taken depending on the size of the work. ### Materials and hardware Under-stairs units are usually built in moisture-resistant MDF with solid timber edges on the fronts, because hallway joinery takes knocks from bags, bikes and buggies. Painted finishes are hand-applied and hard-wearing, and can carry the existing skirting profile across the fronts so the units read as part of the hallway joinery rather than as cupboards. Hardware matters more here than almost anywhere else. A loaded pull-out under a staircase can be extremely heavy, so runners are specified to the expected load with a safety margin, and fronts are fixed to the carcass in a way that will not loosen over years of hard pulls. ### Methods and set-out We survey the underside of every string and riser, record the floor level along the length of the void, and identify any services, consumer unit, meter, gas pipe, stopcock, that must remain accessible. The unit sizes are then set out so the tallest section takes coats and the lowest sections take shoes, cleaning equipment and seasonal items. Fronts are set out to a shared line so the unit reads as one piece from the hall. Where the staircase has a winder or a bulkhead, the units are stepped to follow it rather than stopping short, which is what recovers the last third of the space. ### Variations of the service Full pull-out drawer banks on heavy-duty runners. Hinged cupboards with internal shelving and hanging. Combination layouts: a tall cupboard at the high end, drawers in the middle, shoe storage at the low end. Open shoe and bench areas for a boot-room feel. Under-stairs desks and study nooks. Wine storage, dog beds and cloakroom joinery.
